Just bought a great belt, but it’s a little too long for your waist?
Don’t worry — shortening a belt is easier than you think! With just a few basic tools you probably already have at home, you can cut and adjust the length of your belt in minutes, without any special skills.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process step by step, along with a few tips to help you get a clean, professional-looking finish.
What You’ll Need to Cut a Belt
- A flathead screwdriver (with a flat, sturdy tip)
- Scissors (or a sharp cutter)
- A ruler or tape measure
- A pen or pencil (for marking)
Step-by-Step: How to Shorten Your Belt
Step 1: Open the Keeper Plate
Using the flathead screwdriver, gently pry open the keeper plate (the sliding metal fitting) attached to the belt.
Step 2: Separate the Belt from the Keeper Plate
Once it’s open, you can easily slide the belt strap out and separate it from the metal keeper plate.
Step 3: Mark and Cut to Your Desired Length
Put the belt on to check how much length you need to remove, then measure and mark the spot with a pen. Cut the strap as straight as possible with scissors.
Tip: Before cutting, draw a faint guide line on the back of the belt with a pen or pencil in a subtle color — this makes it much easier to keep your cut perfectly straight.
Tip: Don’t cut too much at once. Trim a little at a time and check the fit as you go, so you don’t end up cutting it too short.
Step 4: Reattach the Keeper Plate
Slide the belt back into the keeper plate and press until you hear a “click.” Your belt is now ready to wear!
Important Notes Before You Cut
- Pushing the belt too far into the keeper plate may cause it to break — always insert it to the proper position, not past it.
- If your belt has studs, eyelets, or other decorative hardware near where the keeper plate sits, it may not close properly, or the hardware could be damaged. Please cut with extra care in these cases.
- Once a belt purchased from us has been cut or altered, we’re unable to accept returns or exchanges.
- Cutting off decorative elements such as studs may change the belt’s original design — please check carefully before cutting.
